What are Sciatic Nerves?
These are the largest nerves in the body which start from lower back and go into each of the legs.Sciatic pain is referred to as a condition in which the sciatic nerve of your thigh gets compressed, as a result of which pain is felt over the area of its distribution which includes area all the way from upper buttocks to your legs and finally to your toes.
Furthermore, sciatic nerve has a sensory distribution over the legs, through its two branches, common fibular and tibial nerves. It’s the largest and longest nerve that originates from the spinal cord.
Sciatica is the word used when pain is caused in the legs due to a lesion or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can involve a tingling sensation, numbness as well as a “pins and needles” sensation. The pain occurs in the legs, and is generally worsened while sitting. This is because the sciatic nerve gets compressed under the buttock muscles while sitting.
The sciatic nerve originates from the spinal cord. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral bones. In these vertebral bones are holes through which nerves of the spinal cord emerge. Between these vertebrae, there are intervertebral discs. Sciatic pain result from a number of diseases involving the vertebral column or the intervertebral discs.
What is sciatic pain?
Let’s first understand what is sciatic pain, this is a pain caused by sciatic nerves and its mostly caused by herniated disc in your lower back. In our spinal cord there are discs in between the bones. What happened is that in the L 4 region of our spine in our lower back. The discs gets pressed due to damage or prolonged use and then the disc presses into the sciatic nerve. Which is the largest nerve in our body. And this causes sharp and stinging pain. Which starts from the lower back and goes down into the legs.
It also causes weakness and numbness in your leg and foot.
Here are a few common causes of sciatic pain:
Lumbar herniated disc. In this, the intervertebral disc between the lumbar vertebrae protrudes through its normal space and compresses the sciatic nerve while it emerges from the spinal cord.
Spondylolisthesis: in this, the lumbar vertebrae that are present at the bottom section of the spinal cord, where the sciatic nerve emerges, fractures and slips. As a result of this slippage, the sciatic nerve gets compressed.
Spinal stenosis: in this, the foramina through which the nerves of your spinal cord emerge are very small, such that the bone around the foramina starts compressing the nerves.
Degenerative disc disease: in this, the intervertebral disc(s) present between the vertebrae starts to degenerate. As a result, the vertebrae lose their support and might compress the sciatic nerve.
These were some of the most common causes of sciatic pain. Other causes include those that involve hypertrophy of the muscles, which can compress the sciatic nerve, or muscle spasms in your buttock or thighs.
Symptoms of Sciatic Pain:
- It causes lower back pain
- Pain in buttocks and hips which gets worse if you sit
- Constant pain to one side of your leg
- Numbness or weakness in the leg
The symptoms of sciatic pain can be understood by trying to understand its nerve distribution. The sciatic nerve emerges from the spinal cord in the lumbar region, passes through the buttock, down the back side of the thigh, and then divides into its two divisions, the common fibular as well as the tibial nerves.
Pain, numbness, a tickling or pin-pricking sensation in this area may be indicative of sciatic pain. The intensity of pain in each case differs, depending on the position at which the sciatic nerve is compressed and the degree of compression of the nerve. In some cases, sciatic pain may be debilitating to such an extent that it prevents the person from standing up and walking in their normal routine. In this case, the pain may be shooting and may disable the person. In other cases, the pain may rise frequently and decrease at other times.
